Want to significantly improve your chances of getting a good nightâs sleep? There is one surprisingly simple thing you can do during the day that may actually help you sleep better that night. Every language and every culture has swear words. Weâre taught as children not to say them, yet somehow we all learn exactly what they are. So why does swearing exist in the first place? And why are certain words considered so much more powerful and offensive than others? It turns out that swearing serves some interesting purposes â and under the right circumstances, it may even have some benefits. Timothy Jay is one of the worldâs leading authorities on the psychology of swearing. He is professor emeritus of psychology at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and author of Cursing in America (https://amzn.to/3CMIs36) and Why We Curse (https://amzn.to/46hZ2FN). Listen as he reveals where our swear words come from, why they have such emotional punch and what happens when we use them.
Confidence is one of those qualities that seems easy to recognize in other people and much harder to summon up in yourself â especially at the exact moment you need it. Maybe you need to speak up, walk into a room full of strangers, ask for something you want or handle a difficult conversation. So can you actually become more confident on demand? Selena Rezvani says you can, and the techniques are surprisingly practical. Selena is a speaker, journalist and author of Quick Confidence: Be Authentic, Create Connections and Make Bold Bets on Yourself (https://amzn.to/43WVJ59). She joins me with simple strategies you can use to quiet self-doubt, appear more confident and actually feel more confident when it counts.
Could changing the expression on your face actually change the way you feel? There is a remarkably simple thing you can do with your face right now that may give your mood a little lift. Listen as I explain what to do â and the intriguing reason it appears to work. Source: Dr. Stephanie McClellan, author of The Ultimate Stress Relief Plan for Women (https://amzn.to/3NLj04s).

Processed food has gotten a pretty terrible reputation. Weâre warned to avoid foods with long ingredient lists, mysterious additives and chemical names we canât pronounce. âUltra-processedâ has practically become another way of saying âbad for you.â But is that a useful way to judge what we eat? After all, almost everything we eat has been processed in some way, and everything we eat â including perfectly natural food â is made of chemicals.
So how can you tell which ingredients are worth worrying about and which ones just sound scary? Why do manufacturers put preservatives, emulsifiers, artificial flavors, stabilizers and other additives into food in the first place? And does a complicated-looking ingredient label actually tell you much about whether a food is healthy?
Here to sort through the chemistry is George Zaidan, an MIT-trained chemist who created National Geographicâs web series Ingredients: The Stuff Inside Your Stuff. He is also author of Ingredients: The Strange Chemistry of What We Put in Us and on Us (https://amzn.to/2Zykgij).
Listen as George explains what some of those strange-sounding ingredients actually are, what they do, what the science says about their safety and why our instincts about ânaturalâ versus âchemicalâ can sometimes lead us astray. If you have ever stood in a grocery store reading a label and wondered, âWhat IS all this stuff?â this conversation may change the way you look at whatâs in your food.

Ever notice that the trip home often seems shorter than the trip thereâeven when the distance and travel time are exactly the same? It happens so often that researchers have given it a name: the âreturn trip effect.â And the explanation reveals something fascinating about how your brain experiences time. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3179583
Youâre told to âtake charge of your healthcare.â But how exactly are you supposed to do that when the doctor is the expert, appointments are short, and navigating the healthcare system can be frustrating and confusing? It turns out there is a lot you can do to get better care. Dr. Lucy McBride explains how to make better use of your doctor, ask the right questions, know when to push for answers, and become a more effective partner in your own healthcare. She is a primary care physician and author of Beyond the Prescription: A Doctorâs Guide to Taking Charge of Your Health (https://amzn.to/4hAEoc3).
Weather is doing things to you that you probably never realize. Sunshine, rain, heat, cold, wind and even changes in atmospheric pressure can affect how you think, feel, sleep and behave. Why are some people far more sensitive to weather than others? Can certain weather actually make us more aggressive or anxious? And why can a particular kind of day trigger such powerful memories and emotions? Dr. Trevor Harley has spent years studying the surprisingly intimate relationship between weather and the human mind. He is Emeritus Professor of Psychology at the University of Dundee and author of Head in the Clouds: How the Weather Affects Our Minds and Mental Health (https://amzn.to/4xN5L7v).
Could you tell whether water is hot or cold just by listening to someone pour it? You probably canâeven if youâve never realized it. Hot and cold water actually sound different, and there is a fascinating reason why. https://www.thenakedscientists.com/articles/questions/why-does-hot-water-sound-different-cold-water-when-poured

How Music Can Actually Heal You & The Skills Technology Is Stealing - SYSK Choice

You probably know that light, noise, temperature and stress can all interfere with your sleep. But what about the moon? Strange as it sounds, some research suggests people really do sleep differently around the time of a full moon â even when they arenât outside looking at it. So what could possibly explain that? Listen as I reveal what researchers have discovered. https://www.self.com/story/full-moon-sleep
Most of us know instinctively that music can change how we feel. The right song can calm you down, lift your mood or bring back a memory in an instant. But scientists are discovering that music may do considerably more than that. There is now fascinating research into how music can affect the brain and body and even be used to help treat certain medical conditions. Neuroscientist Daniel Levitin has been following this research for years, and he joins me to explain what we now know about the remarkable connection between music and our health. Dan is author of the book I Heard There Was a Secret Chord: Music as Medicine (https://amzn.to/46QoQcE).
Technology does so many things for us that we no longer have to do for ourselves. GPS finds our way, search engines remember things for us, and our phones make sure we never have to sit quietly with nothing to do. Convenient? Absolutely. But what happens to the human abilities we stop using? Some surprisingly important skills are beginning to fade from our lives, and losing them may have consequences we havenât considered. Graham Lee joins me to explain which skills are disappearing, why they still matter and what we can do to get them back. He is author of the book Human Being: Reclaim 12 Vital Skills Weâre Losing to Technology (https://amzn.to/46MP53A).
Your brain is not equally good at everything all day long. There are times when you may be better at concentrating, solving problems or doing mentally demanding work â and other times when trying to force it may be an uphill battle. So how do you know when your brain is at its best? Listen as I explain how understanding your brainâs natural rhythms can help you decide what to do â and when to do it. David Rock is author of Your Brain at Work (https://amzn.to/4g3Fk5F).

How often do you strike up a conversation with someone you donât know very well? Probably not as often as you could. It is usually easier to look at your phone, avoid eye contact and keep to yourself. Yet those little interactions you have with a cashier, a neighbor, a coworker or even a stranger in line can have a surprisingly big impact on your life. And chances are, you are seriously underestimating how much you and the other person will enjoy them. Nicholas Epley joins me to explain the fascinating research showing what happens when we become just a little more social and why the payoff can extend well beyond simply having a pleasant conversation. Nicholas is a professor of behavioral science and director of the Center for Decision Research at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. His new book is A Little More Social: How Small Choices Create Unexpected Happiness, Health, and Connection (https://amzn.to/4g5vYHf).
Spend enough time watching the news and it can seem as if the end of the world is always just around the corner. Nuclear war, artificial intelligence, asteroids, pandemics, climate change â there appears to be no shortage of things that could wipe us out. But which threats should genuinely worry us, which ones are wildly exaggerated. Ben Bradford has been investigating the things that supposedly threaten our existence and what he has discovered may change how you think about all those dire warnings. Ben is a journalist and host of the NPR podcast Are We Doomed? (https://doompod.com/), which examines the threats facing humanity â both real and imagined.

It seems like paying attention should be easy. Yet for many of us, it has become one of the hardest things to do. We start reading an article and suddenly we're checking email. We pick up our phone to do one thing and, twenty minutes later, we've forgotten why we picked it up in the first place. We often blame ourselves for lacking discipline, but what if that's only part of the story? Is our ability to focus actually being stolenâand if so, by whom?
Journalist and bestselling author Johann Hari set out to answer those questions by traveling the world and interviewing many of the leading scientists and experts studying attention, distraction, and the brain. What he discovered challenges many of the assumptions we have about why it's become so difficult to concentrate and why simply trying harder isn't enough.
In this fascinating conversation, Johann explains what's really happening to our attention, why deep focus matters so much for creativity, productivity, happiness, and relationships, and what all of us can do to reclaim it. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by distractions or wondered why staying focused seems harder than it used to, you'll find this discussion both eye-opening and surprisingly hopeful.

Disasters strike without warning, leaving people with only seconds to react. Yet those first few moments often determine who survives and who doesn't. Surprisingly, the biggest factor isn't always physical strength, experience, or even luck. It's how your brain responds under extreme stress. Amanda Ripley has spent years studying real-life disasters and the people who lived through them. She explains what happens inside your mind during an emergency, why so many people freeze or make dangerous decisions, and what you can do now to dramatically improve your chances when the unthinkable happens. Amanda is author of the book The Unthinkable: Who Survives When Disaster Strikesâand Why (https://amzn.to/4fGJakN).
Many people think spending lots of time alone is a sign that something is wrongâthat you're lonely, antisocial, or missing out on life. But research tells a very different story. Solitude, when chosen rather than forced, can improve creativity, emotional resilience, relationships, and even your overall well-being. Psychologist Netta Weinstein explains why healthy solitude is one of the most misunderstood tools for living a happier, healthier lifeâand how to know whether you're getting too much, too little, or just the right amount. She is author of the book Solitude: The Science and Power of Being Alone (https://amzn.to/3X1XkWf).
Your phone goes almost everywhere you doâinto your hands, your pocket, your car, the kitchen, even the bathroom. Along the way, it quietly picks up far more than texts and emails. The surprising part isn't that your phone is covered with germsâit's how easily those germs can wind up on you. Listen as I explain why your phone deserves more attention than you probably give it and the simple habit that can keep it from becoming a health hazard. Have you ever wondered why some people seem to lose their hearing gradually while insisting they hear just fine? It turns out this isn't simply denial or stubbornness. The way hearing fades can fool the brain into believing everything is normalâoften delaying treatment until significant hearing has already been lost. Listen as I explain what's really happening and why recognizing the signs isn't nearly as easy as you might think. Source: https://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/age-related-hearing-loss
Few things are more painfulâor more confusingâthan discovering a partner has been unfaithful. Why do people risk everything for an affair? Is it simply a lack of self-control, or is something much deeper happening beneath the surface? And if infidelity comes to light, is the relationship automatically doomed, or can couples actually recover? Glenn Hutchinson, a clinical psychologist and behavioral researcher, joins me to separate myth from science and reveal what decades of research tells us about why people cheat, what their behavior really means, and what happens next. He is author of the new book Unfaithful Minds: The Science and Psychology of Infidelity (https://amzn.to/3UedjS8).
Why do smart, capable people forget appointments, lose their train of thought, make impulsive decisions, or struggle to stay focusedâeven when they know better? The answer lies in something called executive function, the remarkable system in your brain that quietly manages attention, planning, memory, emotional control, and decision-making. When it works well, life feels easier. When it doesn't, the consequences can show up everywhere. Adrian Owen, professor of cognitive neuroscience at the University of Western Ontario, explains how executive function shapes nearly everything you doâand, more importantly, what you can do to strengthen it. He is author of the new book Think Before You Think: Understanding and Mastering Executive Function (https://amzn.to/4fGvlFd).
Why do so many projects seem to fly along at first... only to crawl painfully toward the finish line? Whether you're remodeling a house, writing a report, or tackling a long to-do list, there's a surprising psychological reason the last stretch often feels endless. Once you understand what's happening, you'll have a much better chance of finishing on time instead of wondering where all the extra time disappeared. Most of us think of intelligence as something that happens entirely in the brain. But there's another kind of intelligence that lives in your body. It's what allows you to ride a bicycle years after your last ride, catch a ball without calculating its path, type on a keyboard without looking, or instinctively keep your balance on uneven ground.
Scientists call this physical intelligence, and it's far more important to your everyday life than you may realize. According to my guest Scott Grafton, your body and brain are constantly working together in ways you're barely aware of. In fact, many of the skills you rely on every day don't come from conscious thought at allâthey come from this remarkable partnership between mind and body.
Modern life, however, may be working against us. As technology makes more of our daily tasks easier and more automated, we may be losing opportunities to develop and maintain the very abilities that help us navigate the physical world. That has consequences that go well beyond athletic performance.
Scott Grafton is a professor of neuroscience at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and author of the book Physical Intelligence: The Science of How the Body and the Mind Guide Each Other Through Life (https://amzn.to/3aiI4dm). Listen as he explains how physical intelligence shapes the way we learn, move, solve problems, and interact with the worldâand why challenging your body may be one of the best things you can do for your brain.

Heat can make people do some strange things. It can change your mood, cloud your judgment, and even affect the way you treat other people. Scientists have discovered that hot weather has a surprisingly powerful influence on the human mindâand the effects show up in places you would never expect. Listen as I explain what's really going on and why it's important to know. https://www.apa.org/monitor/2024/06/heat-affects-mental-health
More people today say they feel their lives lack meaning and purpose than at any point in recent decades. Why? Has modern life quietly stripped away something essentialâor are we simply searching for fulfillment in all the wrong places? And if purpose really is the key to a happier life, where does it actually come from? There is no better person to explore these questions with than my guest Arthur Brooks. He is a professor at Harvard Business School, one of the world's leading experts on happiness and human flourishing, a nationally syndicated columnist, CBS News contributor, and co-author with Oprah Winfrey of the bestselling book Build the Life You Want. His latest book is The Meaning of Your Life: Finding Purpose in an Age of Emptiness (https://amzn.to/4yUyVTp). If you've ever wondered what truly gives life meaningâand why so many people struggle to find itâyou'll find this conversation fascinating.
Every few months it seems we're told to stop eating one food and start eating another. Fat is badâuntil it isn't. Carbs are the problemâunless they're not. With so much conflicting advice, it's no wonder so many people have no idea what a healthy diet actually looks like. According to Daniel Lieberman, much of what we've been taught about food is based on myths, misconceptions, and oversimplified thinking. Lieberman is Chair of the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University and author of Fed Up: A Hungry Person's Guide to the Story and Science of Food and Diets (https://amzn.to/4btal2d). He explains what the science really says, why nutrition has become so confusing, and how understanding our evolutionary past can help us make smarter decisions about what we eat.
Have you ever worried that everyone could tell you were nervous? Maybe before giving a presentation, going on a date, or walking into an interview? Most of us assume our anxiety is obviousâbut is it? The answer may surprise you. Listen as I reveal what researchers discovered about how well other people can actually read your emotions. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9731312/

Ever wonder why you're always told to wait about 10 seconds before turning your phone, computer, router, or tablet back on after rebooting it? Is there really something magical about 10 seconds, or is it just one of those tech myths everyone repeats? The answer has to do with what happens inside your device after the power goes offâand why waiting just a little while can make all the difference. https://www.howtogeek.com/165110/do-i-really-have-to-unplug-my-cable-modem-for-at-least-10-seconds/
Americans throw away an astonishing amount of perfectly good foodâabout 40% of everything produced. That's money straight into the trash, and much of it is completely avoidable. The surprising part is that food waste often has less to do with leftovers and more to do with everyday habits, confusing expiration dates, oversized refrigerators, and the way we shop. Kathryn Kellogg explains simple, practical changes that can dramatically reduce waste, save you money, and make life a little easier. Kathryn is founder of Going Zero Waste and author of 101 Ways to Go Zero Waste (https://amzn.to/3yfHSMV)

Insects may be tiny, but they are among the most successful creatures ever to inhabit Earth. They pollinate crops, recycle dead plants and animals, feed countless other species, and have survived for hundreds of millions of years. Yet most of us know almost nothing about them. Why are there so many insects? What's the difference between a bug and an insect? Why do some live only a day while others survive for decades? And what would happen if they disappeared? Steve Nicholls answers these questions and reveals why the future of insects is closely tied to our own. Steve is an Emmy Award-winning wildlife filmmaker and author of Alien Worlds: How Insects Conquered the Earth, and Why Their Fate Will Determine Our Future (https://amzn.to/4d1M1mP).

We tend to think of imagination as something artists, inventors, and children rely on. But imagination is actually one of the most powerfulâand overlookedâabilities we all possess. It shapes the decisions you make, the problems you solve, the goals you pursue, and even the life you create. There is fascinating science behind how imagination works, and once you understand it, you can use it far more effectively. Artificial intelligence can write essays, diagnose diseases, generate stunning images, and defeat the world's best chess players. Yet ask it to perform certain tasks that are effortless for a human child, and it can stumble badly. Why? What exactly makes AI so powerful in some areasâand surprisingly weak in others? Beneath the headlines are some fascinating realities about how AI actually works and where it still falls short. Here to explain it is Toby Walsh, one of the world's leading AI researchers. When a highway lane is closed ahead, should you merge immediately or wait until the very end? Anyone who has ever owned a dog has probably wondered what goes on inside that furry little head. Does your dog feel guilty after chewing up your favorite shoes? Does it know when you've had a bad day? Does it love you the way you love it? We often assume we know what our dogs are thinking, but many of our assumptions are completely wrong. Understanding how dogs actually perceive the world can transform the relationship you have with your pet.
According to dog behavior expert Camilla Gray-Nelson, dogs don't think the way humans do, and many common training mistakes happen because people expect dogs to understand things they simply don't. Once you begin to see the world from your dog's perspective, communication becomes easier, unwanted behaviors are easier to change, and training becomes far less frustratingâfor both of you. Camilla shares fascinating insights into how dogs interpret our actions, what motivates their behavior, and how to build a happier, more cooperative relationship with your four-legged companion. She is author of Lipstick & the Leash: Dog Training a Woman's Way (http://amzn.to/2mkKr5Z).

Finding cheap airfare has become almost a game. People swear by booking on Tuesdays, searching in incognito mode, or buying tickets at a certain time of day. But how much of that actually works? The truth is that airline pricing is driven by a surprisingly complex systemâand once you understand what really causes fares to rise and fall, you can dramatically improve your odds of paying less. Here with an insider's look at how airfare pricing really works is Scott Keyes, founder of Going.com (formerly Scott's Cheap Flights), which tracks airfare deals for more than two million travelers worldwide. Listening to this conversation will save you money.
People say they're "burned out" all the time. But are they really? According to the official definition, true burnout is far less common than most people think. In fact, many people who believe they're burned out are actually dealing with something very differentâand treating the wrong problem only makes things worse. Psychotherapist and mental strength expert Amy Morin explains how to tell the difference, what burnout really looks like, and the practical steps that can help you regain your energy. Amy hosts the award-winning Mentally Stronger with Therapist Amy Morin podcast (https://amymorinlcsw.com/podcasts/), her TEDx Talk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFbv757kup4) has been viewed more than 25 million times, and she is author of The Mental Strength Playbook. Waiting in line, sitting on hold, or watching the spinning wheel on your computer can feel maddening. But here's the interesting part: it's often not the wait itself that frustrates us. What really gets under our skin is something else entirely. Once you understand why waiting feels so unpleasant, you'll discover a few surprisingly simple ways to make almost any wait seem much shorter and more tolerable. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2024/dec/15/i-waited-45-minutes-to-buy-a-single-croissant-in-fitzroy-why-do-humans-queue

According to Harvard Business School professor Michael Norton, there isâand it has surprisingly little to do with how much you spend. Walk through a crowded airport or packed stadium and something remarkable happens. Thousands of people weave around each other without collisions, almost as if everyone is reading everyone else's mind. Yet no one is directing traffic. So how does your brain constantly predict where complete strangers are about to moveâand why does it work so well? (https://www.nature.com/articles/nature08260)
Rejection stings. Whether it's being turned down for a job, ignored after asking someone out, or hearing "no" when you were hoping for "yes," most of us spend a lot of energy trying to avoid it. But what if that's exactly backward? What if deliberately seeking rejection could make you more confident, more successful, and surprisingly happier? Jia Jiang decided to test that idea by intentionally getting rejected 100 times in 100 days. What happened changed the course of his lifeâand it may change the way you think about rejection forever. Jia is an award-winning entrepreneur, speaker, and bestselling author. Every couple argues. The real challenge is to understand what those fights are actually about. The disagreement over dirty dishes, money, or who's late again is often just the surface of something much deeper. Once you understand what's really driving those recurring arguments, everything changes. Relationship therapist Kim Polinder explains why couples keep having the same fights, how to stop damaging each other in the process, and what healthy conflict really looks like. Kim has helped hundreds of thousands of people through her work online (https://www.youtube.com/@engineeringlovepodcast) and is author of Why We Fight: A Transformative Road Map to Healing Conflict in Any Relationship. Your signature probably wasn't always a scribble. When you first learned to sign your name, you likely wrote every letter carefully and neatly. So why do almost everyone's signature eventually become an indecipherable scrawl? It turns out there's an interesting psychological reason behind that evolutionâand it says more about you than you might think.

Some mysteries have been solved by science. Others remain surprisingly stubborn. Despite all our advances in technology and research, there are still questions that continue to puzzle some of the brightest minds on Earth. Do we really have free will? Why does the placebo effect work? Have extraterrestrials ever tried to contact us? Those are just a few of the scientific mysteries you are about to explore.
Why do these mysteries persist? Is it because we simply don't have enough evidence yet, or are some answers beyond our ability to discover? Joining me to examine some of the most intriguing unanswered questions in science is Michael Brooks. Michael is an award-winning science writer and author of the book 13 Things That Don't Make Sense: The Most Baffling Scientific Mysteries of Our Time (https://amzn.to/2NvuAmO). Listen as he explains what scientists know, what they suspect, and where the biggest gaps in our understanding still remain.
If history has taught us anything, it's that today's impossible mystery can become tomorrow's accepted fact. Along the way, though, scientists must separate evidence from speculation, challenge long-held assumptions, and sometimes admit they simply don't know. This conversation explores the fascinating space between certainty and mysteryâand why that's often where the most exciting discoveries begin.

How Slowing Down Makes Life Better & Why Every Brain Needs Music

Ever notice how your face turns bright red when you're embarrassedâand makes the whole situation even worse? As awkward as blushing feels, it isn't a design flaw. It's actually serving a purpose that's far more useful than most people realize. https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/bering-in-mind/why-we-blush-the-social-purpose-of-showing-embarrassment/
Many of us race through life without even realizing we're doing it. We hurry through meals, conversations, vacationsâeven our free time. But what if all that rushing is quietly making life less enjoyable and less fulfilling? According to Carl HonorĂ©, slowing down isn't about getting less doneâit's about getting far more out of everything you do. He explains why living at a different pace can transform your work, your relationships, and your happiness. Carl is author of In Praise of Slowness (https://amzn.to/43GRlXN).
Music is everywhere. We choose to listen to some of it, while the rest quietly fills stores, restaurants, movies, TV shows, elevators, and countless other places. But what is all that music actually doing to your brain? Why does it have such a powerful effect on memory, emotion, focus, and even the way you experience the world? Larry Sherman reveals the remarkable neuroscience behind music and why our brains seem wired to need it. Larry is Professor of Neuroscience at Oregon Health & Science University and author of Every Brain Needs Music: The Neuroscience of Making and Listening to Music (https://amzn.to/3JdFDf8).
Silver jewelry naturally tarnishes over timeâbut there's an inexpensive household item that can help slow the process dramatically. Have you ever met someone named Lucy and thought, "She really looks like a Lucy"? As strange as it sounds, scientists have discovered there may be more truth to that feeling than you realize. We all give away far more than we think. Tiny facial expressions, subtle gestures, the way we sit, stand, or even touch our face can reveal confidence, nervousness, deception, attraction, and much more. Once you know what to look for, it's almost impossible not to notice these hidden signals. Joining me is Peter Collett, a social psychologist who taught at Oxford University and is internationally recognized for his expertise in human behavior and nonverbal communication. What is the brightest thing in the universe? The stickiest substance? The loudest sound? The coldest place? The fastest, slowest, biggest and smallest things imaginable? You'll come away with a collection of facts you'll be repeating to people for weeks.
Why does food often seem to taste better after a simple ritualâlike singing "Happy Birthday" before eating cake? Your brain performs an astonishing magic trick every second of every day. It decides what deserves your attentionâand what doesn't. Most of the time that's incredibly helpful. But it also means important clues, costly mistakes, opportunities, and even obvious dangers can sit right in front of you without you ever noticing them. Why does that happen, and can you train yourself to see what you've been missing? Here to explain is Keelan Leyser, a digital illusionist and one of the world's leading experts on attention and perception. Along with the late neuropsychologist David Lewis, he is co-author of the book Unseen: Blind Spots and Why We Miss What Matters Most (https://amzn.to/4ylvxkh).
Most of us walk on sidewalks without giving them a second thought. But once you start asking simple questionsâWho actually owns the sidewalk? Who is responsible to maintain it? Why do some sidewalks suddenly end? And why do some streets have no sidewalks at all? âyou discover that sidewalks are surprisingly complicated and have become the center of debates over property rights, public space, safety, and even free speech. Michael Pollack takes us into a world that's been hiding in plain sight. He is Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Faculty Development at the Benjamin N. When you suddenly need to buy somethingâa new refrigerator, a laptop, a plane ticket, almost anythingâit's easy to assume you have no choice but to pay whatever it costs. In reality, there's one surprisingly simple habit that can keep "must buy it now" moments from quietly costing you hundreds of dollars over time. https://www.consumerreports.org/money/shopping/how-to-save-money-shopping-online/

Most of us spend a lot of time trying to be happy and avoiding sadness whenever we can. But what if sadness isn't something to fear or eliminate? What if it's one of the most important emotions we have?
Why do we cry when we're grievingâbut also when we're overwhelmed with joy? Why does listening to sad music often make us feel better instead of worse? And when does a good cry actually help us recover, while other times it only leaves us feeling stuck?
According to David Huron, sadness isn't simply an unpleasant emotion we have to endure. It serves important psychological and biological purposes that help us cope with loss, strengthen relationships, and even prepare us for the future. Understanding how sadness works can change the way you experience difficult moments and help you recognize the difference between healthy sadness and harmful rumination.
David Huron is Professor Emeritus at Ohio State University and author of The Science of Sadness: A New Understanding of Emotion. Remarkably, he has made the entire book available as a free PDF here:https://direct.mit.edu/books/oa-monograph/5772/The-Science-of-SadnessA-New-Understanding-of

Ask people to name the greatest investor of all time and chances are Warren Buffett will top the list. So what does he know that the rest of us don't? What principles has he followed for decades that allowed him to build one of history's greatest fortunesâand how can ordinary investors put those same ideas to work? Here to explain is John Longo, Professor of Professional Practice in the Finance and Economics Department at Rutgers Business School and Chief Investment Officer of Beacon Trust, a $3+ billion registered investment advisor. He is co-author of the book, Buffett's Tips: A Guide to Financial Literacy and Life.(https://amzn.to/4fjckqZ)
No matter how hard we try to avoid them, disagreements are a part of life. The problem is that too many of them quickly turn into arguments where no one changes their mind and everyone walks away frustrated. But research shows there are surprisingly effective ways to disagree that make people more willing to listen, preserve relationships, and often lead to better outcomes. Here with that practical advice is Julia Minson, a behavioral scientist whose work focuses on the psychology of disagreement. Her research has been featured in TIME, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, and The New York Times.
She is a professor at Harvard Kennedy School and author of the book How to Disagree Better (https://amzn.to/4wHHbEx).

Why do mosquitoes seem to feast on some people while barely bothering others? It turns out your attractiveness to mosquitoes has much less to do with "sweet blood" than with your body chemistry, the carbon dioxide you exhale, and even your skin microbes. Understanding what really attracts mosquitoes can help you avoid becoming their favorite summertime meal. https://hartfordhealthcare.org/about-us/news-press/news-detail?articleId=42234&publicid=395#
Most people think eating healthier means giving up the foods they love and following a restrictive diet. Unfortunately, that's one reason so many diets fail. According to nutrition expert Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, you don't need to obsess over what you can't eat. Instead, the key is making sure your body gets the nutrients it needs while working with the foods you already enjoy. Dr. Ballantyne is founder of Nutrivore.com and author of Nutrivore: The Radical New Science for Getting the Nutrients You Need from the Food You Eat (https://amzn.to/4cREoPN). She explains how a simple shift in thinking can make healthy eating both easier and more sustainable.
Few animals are as disliked as rats. They've been blamed for spreading disease, destroying property, and invading our homes for centuries. Yet rats are among the most adaptable and intelligent mammals on Earth. They've followed humans around the globe, thriving almost everywhere we live, and their remarkable survival skills reveal an animal that's far more sophisticated than its terrible reputation suggests. Joe Shute is an award-winning journalist and author of Stowaway: The Disreputable Exploits of the Rat (https://amzn.to/3WiYzPl). He shares the fascinating history of rats, why they have become such successful survivors, and why you may see these much-maligned rodents in a very different light after hearing his story.
Most meetings are held around a conference table because... well, that's just how meetings are done. But research suggests the way people are physically arranged during a meeting can have a surprising impact on how they think, contribute, and work together. There is one simple change that can dramatically alter the dynamics of almost any meeting. https://www.inc.com/jessica-stillman/how-to-make-your-team-more-collaborative.html

If your porch light seems to attract every moth and flying insect in the neighborhood, you're not imagining it. Some people seem to light up a room the moment they walk in. Others naturally draw people in, inspire confidence, and make lasting impressions. We call it charisma, and many assume you're either born with it or you're not. Olivia Fox Cabane says that's simply not true. In this conversation, she explains what charisma really is, why it's often misunderstood, and the surprisingly practical skills anyone can learn to become more influential and engaging. Olivia has advised leaders at Google, Deloitte, UBS, MGM, and TikTok, and is author of The Charisma Myth: How Anyone Can Master the Art and Science of Personal Magnetism (https://amzn.to/44kpuyI).
For decades, we've talked about "the midlife crisis" as though it's inevitable. But what if we've gotten midlife completely wrong? Research suggests that your middle years can be one of the most productive, satisfying, and influential periods of your life. So why does this stage have such a negative reputation? And what are people in midlife uniquely positioned to do that younger and older adults often can't? Margie Lachman, Professor of Psychology at Brandeis University and director of the Lifespan Lab, shares a fresh, evidence-based perspective on why midlife deserves a lot more celebration than sympathy. She is author of Primetime: A New Vision for Midlife (https://amzn.to/4bpLbRJ).
Have you ever searched everywhere for your keys or your glasses, only to discover they were sitting in plain sight the whole time? It's a surprisingly common experience, and it reveals something fascinating about how your brain decides what you doâand don'tâsee. https://dictionary.apa.org/inattentional-blindness

Few foods are as American as the hamburger. Every year, Americans eat billions of them, and they are a staple at backyard barbecues, diners, ballparks, and restaurants around the world. Yet despite being one of the most recognizable foods on the planet, no one seems to agree on where the hamburger actually came from.
Like many great origin stories, the history of the hamburger has become tangled in myth, hometown pride, and competing claims. Over the years, dozens of people and places have been credited with inventing it, but separating fact from folklore isn't easy. That's what prompted award-winning author and historian Chris Carosa to approach the mystery the way a detective wouldâby following the evidence wherever it led.
Using classic investigative techniques, Chris dug through historical records, newspaper accounts, business documents, and eyewitness reports to piece together the hamburger's true story. His research reveals how the sandwich evolved, why so many people claimed to invent it, and how it eventually became one of America's most beloved foods. Along the way, he uncovers some fascinating misconceptions and surprising twists that have kept this culinary mystery alive for more than a century.
Chris Carosa is an award-winning writer, historian, and author of Hamburger Dreams: How Classic Crime Solving Techniques Helped Crack the Case of America's Greatest Culinary Mystery (https://amzn.to/2Hevorp). In this episode, he explains what the evidence really shows about the hamburger's origins, why the accepted story may be wrong, and how one simple sandwich became an enduring American icon.

From the time we're children, we're constantly reminded to "sit up straight" and "don't slouch." We've been told that good posture prevents pain, improves health, and even makes us more confident. But how much of that is actually supported by science? According to Beth Linker, surprisingly little. In this conversation, she explores where our ideas about posture came from, why so many assumptions have gone unchallenged, and what the evidence really says about the way we sit, stand, and move. Beth is a former physical therapist, medical historian, and author of Slouch: Posture Panic in Modern America (https://amzn.to/4480Hhk).
Imagine remembering names almost instantly, recalling conversations in remarkable detail, or memorizing enormous amounts of information with ease. It may sound like a rare gift, but Nelson Dellis says it's a skill almost anyone can learn. As a six-time USA Memory Champion, a two-time Guinness World Record holder and Grandmaster of Memory. He has mastered techniques that dramatically improve recallâand they're far simpler than most people imagine. He is author of Everyday Genius: Hacks to Boost Your Memory, Focus, Problem-Solving, and Much More (https://amzn.to/3Rlxpc7).

Can simply believing a treatment will work actually help it work better? Surprisingly, yes. Most of us think of politeness as little more than saying "please" and "thank you." But good manners do much more than make social interactions pleasant. They help build trust, strengthen relationships, reduce conflict, and even influence how people judge our competence and character. So why are some people naturally more polite than others? Do the rules of politeness change depending on where you are or who you're talking to? And can you be bluntâor even rudeâand still earn people's respect? Louise Mullany has spent more than 25 years studying the science of politeness. She is Professor of Sociolinguistics at the University of Nottingham and author of Polite: The Art of Communication at Home, at Work and in Public (https://amzn.to/3xVN9Jo).
You can outsource your rĂ©sumĂ©, polish your LinkedIn profile, and even use AI to help write a cover letter. But when it's time for the interview, it's all on you. Too many candidates hope they'll "just answer the questions," only to discover they weren't nearly as prepared as they thought. Sam Owens explains what hiring managers are really looking for, the mistakes that immediately hurt your chances, and how a little preparation can dramatically improve your performanceâwhether you're interviewing in person or over Zoom.
